Wages

The minimum wages and conditions for workers depend on their age, industry, state or territory, position, and whether they are permanent or casual staff. However, there are minimum national standards in place for employees in the national workplace relations system to provide minimum rates of pay for employees not covered by awards or agreements. These wages are determined by Fair Work Australia and reviewed annually.

Australia’s minimum wage is $17.70 per hour or $672.70 per week for adults aged 21 or over. Generally, employees in the national system shouldn’t get less than this. Employers and employees cannot agree to a rate of pay which is less than the minimum wage. On top of this rate, you may be entitled to allowances or loadings depending on the job and employment type, such as uniform or meal allowances, or casual loading for casual staff.

Leave

All employees who are covered by national workplace laws have leave entitlements covered by the 10 National Employment Standards. Types of leave that you may be entitled to include:

  • Personal, carers’ and compassionate leave
  • Long service leave
  • Public holidays
