Ask if they have signed the Homeworkers
Code of Practice negotiated
with the Textile, Clothing and Footwear
Union (TCFUA) and if not, why.
State that the Homeworkers Code of
Practice is an industry-wide approach
to ending exploitation and ensuring
that home-based outworkers who make
the goods receive award wages and
conditions.
Ask what measures they are taking to
ensure that homeworkers who produce
garments for their label are not
exploited.
Mention you deep concern at the
allegations of exploitation, particularly
child labour, heard at the Senate
inquiry into outworking in the garment
industry.
State your determination as a consumer
and a concerned citizen not to buy
products from companies which do not
take steps to ensure that homeworkers
who make their garments receive
award wages and conditions.
Say that you are appalled that the
company would continue to put profits
before people. Until you hear that the
company has signed the Homeworkers
Code of Practice with the TCFUA and is
using only manufacturers and
sub-contractors who pay their wages
according to the legal standards in
Australia, you will actively support Fair
Wear and encourage others to get involved.
